What happens during an individual appointment?
One of the most critical steps in choosing a major is to connect with an Exploration Program Advisor. EXP advisors are interested in YOU! We need to know about you in order to help connect you to major/career alternatives that will be a good fit.
Assessment
During your appointment, your advisor will ask lots of questions. They need to learn several important things about you in order to:- Discover your interests, hobbies, and goals
- Review your completed academic work to identify academic strengths/weaknesses, often using the following tools and questions:
- What are your subjects of strength/weakness (math, science, writing, etc.)?
- How long do you want to be in school (time to degree)?
- Is your grade point average holding you back from your desired major? If so, you’ll complete a GPA Projection with your advisor.
- Review your advising report to see if any course work might apply to a potential major
Planning
Once your advisor knows some preliminary information about you, they will then:- Create a personalized plan for exploring majors
- Help you connect your career interests and major interests
- Students often make the mistake of thinking that they must select a major with an obvious or direct path to a career. Keep in mind that your major is not nearly as critical as the fact that you’ve earned a degree—most employers rate experience higher than degree type when hiring new graduates.
- Introduce you to major/career alternatives and options, including major/minor combinations to meet academic/career goals and interests
- Build on your previous academic experience to choose a new or related direction
- Help you transition into your new academic program (degree-granting college)
- Provide resources such as:
