Second majors and dual degrees

Some, but not all, majors at Ohio State can be secondary majors or "M2s." There is not currently a public list of all majors that are available as secondary majors, but your advisor can access the list, which includes most majors from the College of Arts and Sciences and some of the majors offered by the College of Education and Human Ecology, the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Glenn College of Public Affairs.

If a student is interested in completing two majors and neither major is available as a secondary major, they still have the option of completing a dual degree. This option takes more credit hours and allows for less overlap.

This chart describes the differences between the two:

Double Major

Dual Degree

Two majors, with at least 18 independent hours in each major. (So long as there are 18 independent hours in each major, some overlap between majors may be permitted, and some overlap between the majors and general education courses may be permitted.)

Two distinct majors; no overlap between majors permitted; no overlap (beyond what the general education requirements specifically allow) is permitted between a major and the general education requirements.

Follow the minimum required hours for the degree of the primary major.

30 hours beyond the minimum required for either degree.

Receive one diploma.

Receive two diplomas – one for each degree.

Complete both majors before becoming eligible to graduate.

Earn two degrees at one time or separately.
